10,000 MASSES FOR UNBORN BABIES SCHEDULED FOR JANUARY 13th - 21st, 2009
MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE (November 13th, 2008) - The Saint Michael the Archangel Organization, which coordinated the October 18th, 2008 WORLDWIDE ROSARY FOR UNBORN BABIES prayer event, is pleased to announce it is now coordinating the 10,000 MASSES FOR UNBORN BABIES effort which is scheduled to take place for nine consecutive days(January 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st). This Novena of Masses will be for the following intention: For the protection of unborn human persons.

" The 10,000 MASSES FOR UNBORN BABIES is being done to provide protection for innocent unborn babies," said Patrick Benedict, the president of the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization and a parishioner at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church(Diocese of Memphis in Tennessee). "Obviously, these babies can not have Masses offered for themselves. But, people like myself can have Masses offered, and I am hoping many will choose to do exactly that."

A person who wants to be a part of this effort may do so by asking a priest to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for the protection of unborn human persons(the Mass should be offered on any day from January 13th - 21st, 2009). The date and the location of the Mass would then need to be registered with the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization. This can be done by either sending an email to PatrickBenedict@rcin.net or by sending the information by mail to P. O. Box 41257; Memphis, Tennessee 38174; U.S.A.

The website of the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization is www.SaintMichaelTheArchangelOrganization.org

"There is no such thing as a 'choice' to kill an unborn baby," continued Benedict. "A person who murders an unborn baby, or a person who formally cooperates with that action, puts his soul at risk of being eternally separated from God And, that(eternal separation from God) is hell. This is a truth that needs to be repeated often."

(A message from Patrick Benedict, President of the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization)

November 12th, 2008

Firstly, I am very happy to report to you that many people supported the October 18th, 2008 WORLDWIDE ROSARY FOR UNBORN BABIES prayer event. Support came in from at least one source for each of the following nations: Portugal, Ireland, Malta, England, Australia, Latvia, Tanzania, Italy, Lithuania, Croatia, Czech Republic,Philippines, United States, Canada, India, Peru, Ghana, Kenya, and Poland. Please note: There was no requirement to contact the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization, so the list may actually be longer.

Secondly, the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization is now in the process of coordinating the 10,000 MASSES FOR UNBORN BABIES effort, scheduled to take place from January 13th - January 21st, 2009. This Novena of Masses will be offered for the following intention: For the protection of unborn human persons. I greatly encourage you to help with this effort by having one or more Masses offered. Information about this can be found at www.SaintMichaelTheArchangelOrganization.org. I also very much encourage you to let many other people(including your parish priest(s)) know about the 10,000 MASSES FOR UNBORN BABIES effort(an "Information Page/Bulletin Insert" is available at the above-mentioned website).

Thirdly, the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization was founded in the year 2007. The Organization has coordinated the following: ROSARY FOR LIFE SUNDAY(October 14th, 2007); ONE MILLION ROSARIES FOR UNBORN BABIES(May 3rd, 2008); and, the WORLDWIDE ROSARY FOR UNBORN BABIES(October 18th, 2008). As mentioned, the 10,000 MASSES FOR UNBORN BABIES is presently being coordinated. It is hoped there will be a 2nd annual ONE MILLION ROSARIES FOR UNBORN BABIES prayer event on May 1st and 2nd, 2009 as well as a 2nd annual WORLDWIDE ROSARY FOR UNBORN BABIES prayer event on October 17th, 2009.

During the time of its existence, the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization has been blessed to receive a total of about $2,800 in donations. Expenses have included postage stamps, photocopying, etc. Presently, the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization has only about $300 in its checking account. (A fundraising letter was mailed out recently to 100 or so people, and I am hoping this has resulted and/or will result in many donations for the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization.)

I want to ask you to consider doing the following: Please send an email to the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization after you read this today and let it be known that you would like to make a donation. A donation envelope will then be sent to your mailing address. Your donation may be less than a dollar, or it may be much more. I simply ask that you consider being a part of this effort to help the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization. You may send your email to PatrickBenedict@rcin.net. Please include your mailing address. I am hoping at least one thousand emails come in. I will plan on letting you know the results later(The Saint Michael the Archangel Organization is a non-profit corporation, but donations are not tax-deductible).

I extend a tremendous "thank you" to each person who participated in and/or promoted the October 18th WORLDWIDE ROSARY FOR UNBORN BABIES prayer event.

Sincerely,

Patrick Benedict, President
Saint Michael the Archangel Organization

p.s. The Saint Michael the Archangel Organization has been blessed time and time again by the dear lady who does its website. If you would be so kind as to pray one Hail Mary for her, I sure would appreciate it. And, though she may be a little surprised to know this is being asked for her, I believe she will be very appreciative.

Whiskey Review: George Dickel Original Tennessee Whiskey

Okay, it's about time for another Whiskey review...After all, Lent is long over.

The two or three readers of this blog already know about my fondness for Bourbon Whiskey, however this time I have selected a Tennessee Whiskey that a friend of mine introduced me to.

George Dickel Original Tennessee Whiskey is a moderately priced whiskey between $20-30 a bottle. Dickel is 90 proof and has a nice complexity to it, I get a wonderful spicy note. It has a great aroma, but gosh, I think most Whiskey's do. I drink it on the rocks as I do all other whiskey and would say that Dickel is a very good sipping whiskey and recommend it to anyone who appreciates a good Bourbon or Scotch.

3,000 Assyrians Received into the Catholic Church

Article taken from Rorate Caeli Blog

The Chaldean Catholic Diocese of St. Peter and Paul has formally received into its fold, those members of the Assyrian Catholic Apostolic Diocese who, under the leadership of Mar Bawai Soro (pictured above), had asked to be reconciled with the Catholic Church last January 17, 2008.

One bishop (Mar Bawai himself), six priests, 30+ deacons and subdeacons and an estimated 3,000 faithful were received into full communion during liturgical celebrations for the Feast of Pentecost. The announcement by the Chaldean Catholic Church can be found here.

The Black Cordelias blog has an earlier article here.

Mar Bawai Soro has long advocated the Primacy of the See of Rome. On November 2, 2005, he presented to the Synod of Bishops of the Assyrian Church of the East (of which he was a bishop at that time) a paper entitled "The Position of the Church of the East Theological Tradition on the Questions of Church Unity and Full Communion " in which, among other things, he stated that

The Church of the East attributes a prominent role to Saint Peter and a
significant place for the Church of Rome in her liturgical, canonical and
Patristic thoughts. There are more than 50 liturgical, canonical and Patristic
citations that explicitly express such a conviction. The question before us
therefore is, why there must be a primacy attributed to Saint Peter in the
Church? If there is no primacy in the universal church, we shall not be able to
legitimize a primacy of all the Catholicos-Patriarchs in the other apostolic
churches. If the patriarchs of the apostolic churches have legitimate authority
over their own respective bishops it is so because there is a principle of
primacy in the universal Church. If the principle of primacy is valid for a
local Church (for example, the Assyrian Church of the East), it is so because it
is already valid for the universal church. If there is no Peter for the
universal church there could not be Peter for the local Church. If all the
apostles are equal in authority by virtue of the gift of the Spirit, and if the
bishops are the successors of the Apostles, based on what then one of these
bishops (i.e., the Catholicos-Patriarchs) has authority over the other
bishops?

The Church of the East possesses a theological, liturgical and
canonical tradition in which she clearly values the primacy of Peter among the
rest of the Apostles and their churches and the relationship Peter has with his
successors in the Church of Rome. The official organ of our Church of the East,
Mar Abdisho of Soba, the last theologian in our Church before its fall, based
himself on such an understanding when he collected his famous Nomocanon in which
he clearly states the following: “To the Great Rome [authority] was given
because the two pillars are laid [in the grave] there, Peter, I say, the head of
the Apostles, and Paul, the teacher of the nations. [Rome] is the first see and
the head of the patriarchs.” (Memra 9; Risha 1) Furthermore, Abdisho asserts “.
. . . And as the patriarch has authority to do all he wishes in a fitting manner
in such things as are beneath his authority, so the patriarch of Rome has
authority over all patriarchs, like the blessed Peter over all the community,
for he who is in Rome also keeps the office of Peter in all the church. He who
transgresses against these things the ecumenical synod places under anathema.”
(Memra 9; Risha 8). I would like to ask here the following: who among us would
dare to think that he or she is more learned than Abdisho of Soba, or that they
are more sincere to the church of our forefather than Mar Abdisho himself? This
is true especially since we the members of the Holy Synod have in 2004 affirmed
Mar Abdisho’s List of Seven Sacraments as the official list of the Assyrian
Church of the East. How much more then we ought to consider examining and
receiving Abdisho’s Synodical legislation in his Nomocanon?

Five days later, Mar Bawai was suspended by the Holy Synod of the Assyrian Church. The story behind this, as well as the full text of the paper on papal primacy that Mar Bawai had presented to the Synod, can be found here.

Following upon his suspension, Mar Bawai and the clergy and faithful who had remained loyal to him formed the Assyrian Catholic Apostolic Diocese, then proceeded to draw ever closer to the Catholic Church through the Chaldean Catholic Patriarchate. How fitting that they finally came home on Pentecost Sunday. Deo Gratias!

[...] and then by the will of the vicar of Christ, [priests] must accept the petitions and the requests of the faithful who want this mass and must offer it to them. And even if it is not specifically asked for or requested they should make it available so that everyone access to this treasure of the ancient liturgy of the Church.[...] The Holy Father want this form of the mass to become a normal one in the parishes so that in this way young communities can also become familiar with this rite."God bless the Cardinal and the Pope!" Permission has been granted...
His Eminence, Franc Cardinal Rodé, Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life has communicated permission to establish a monastery for the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration here in San Antonio. We can now prepare in earnest for the arrival of five nuns from Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Hanceville, Alabama. They will be taking up residence in our St. Joseph Parish House. There is, of course, a chapel there with the Blessed Sacrament, although they will be attending Mass ordinarily here at the parish. We’re looking forward to welcoming the Sisters as part of our extended “Atonement Family,” and we need to pray for them as they get ready to leave their present beloved monastery to begin this new work.

Vatican To Instruct Seminaries: Must Teach Seminarians Extraordinary Form Mass- Laus Tibi, Christe!

This post is reproduced from The Cafeteria Is Closed Blog

The fact that the pope himself had the TLM Good Friday prayer updated has one important consequence - it no longer is a "fly in amber", no longer a "dated fossil". For the first time since 1962, the TLM has been updated, as it had been many times before. Increasingly popular with seminarians and priests (in particular the young and the old, who've often formed an inter-generational bond that tends to exclude the middle-aged), the Vatican is now working on requiring TLM training in seminaries. I'd venture an uneducated guess - the long-term goal is a liturgical reform V2.0, keeping aspects of the not-so-Novus Ordo (eg reformed calendar, concelebration, new lectionary) while returning to the structure and solemnity of the TLM.

From the Catholic Herald (UK)

Seminaries throughout the Catholic world will have to teach candidates how to celebrate the pre-Vatican II Latin Mass, it emerged last weekend.A letter from the Ecclesia Dei commission, the body which deals with matters concerning the 1962 missal, said that the Vatican is preparing to order rectors to “provide for the instruction of their candidates in both forms of the Roman Rite” in a forthcoming clarification of Summorum Pontificum, the Apostolic Letter which liberated the traditional Mass last July. The Ecclesia Dei letter said:

“Candidates for the priesthood in the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church have the right to be instructed in both forms of the Roman Rite.“Those responsible for the formation of candidates for the priesthood in the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church should provide the instruction of their candidates in both forms of the Roman Rite.”The letter surfaced last weekend on an internet site run by Fr John Zuhlsdorf, an American blogger who once worked for Ecclesia Dei.Several seminaries which serve England and Wales are planning to follow the Pope’s instructions. This could mean that in a few years every new priest will be qualified to say the traditional Mass.

The Beda College in Rome has no problems with the demands made by the letter, its rector Mgr Roderick Strange said. “When the clarification comes, then we’ll start making provisions for it. We’ll be able to establish the needs for it and so on at that time,” said Mgr Strange.Fr Mark Crisp, rector of St Mary’s College, Oscott, Birmingham, said he was open to the possibility. “What we have at the moment is a Latin Mass in the ordinary rite [Novus Ordo] once a month and we teach Latin, though we don’t have anyone competent to teach the extraordinary rite at the moment,” he said. But Canon Jeremy Garrat at St John’s College, Wonersh, expressed caution. “We’d better wait for the instructions from Rome before taking any steps,” he said.Rectors from the Venerable English College in Rome, Allen Hall in London and St Cuthbert’s College in Ushaw, Durham, were unavailable for comment.

Pope Changes Good Friday Prayer For The Jews

Okay, it seems as though the Pope has changed the Good Friday prayer for the conversion of the Jews, although, I still have not seen any "Official" statement that there is one. While I am a bit disappointed that the Holy Father saw fit to make this change, I don't think that it's an Earth shattering decision. The new prayer is as follows-

Let us also pray for the Jews: That our God and Lord may enlighten their hearts, that they acknowledge Jesus Christ as the Saviour of all men.

Let us pray. Let us bend our knees.

Rise.

Almighty and eternal God, who want that all men be saved and attain the knowledge of the truth, propitiously grant that as the fullness of the Gentiles enters Thy Church, all Israel be saved. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Although I highly favor the traditional prayer(being that is was biblical and was handed down to us by our Fathers in the faith) I don't think the new prayer is bad at all. Shawn Tribe from The New Liturgical Movement Blog made what I believe is a VERY important observation in this matter. Mr. Tribe opines,

"Also, it is quite noteworthy that the Pope would not simply insert the prayer as found in the modern Roman Missal, which is, if we are honest, quite ambiguous on the point. The fact that the Pope wouldn't could be attested to as a desire to avoid any sense of mixing the two -- though given what he said in Summorum Pontificum, one wonders how hard and fast he would be on that point -- but I would suggest a more significant possibility is to consider whether the Pope does not, himself, see deficiencies in the prayer as found in the modern Roman missal."

So, Buck Up, fellow Traditional Catholics, and lets not make more out of this than we should.

Pope To Change Good Friday Prayers?

Il Giornale is reporting that the Pope is about to change the Good Friday prayer for the conversion of the Jews. I hope this news story is wrong. This move would not not seem to fit the model of Pope Benedict XVI that we have seen thus far. I believe it would be a huge step backwards if the Pope were to do this, and that is why I doubt the veracity of this news story. Time will tell.
