Book Review- Blessed James Kern, O. Praem

Recently I had the pleasure of reading a book published by the Norbertine Canons of St. Michael's Abbey, titled Blessed James Kern, The Priest of Atonement. Blessed James joined the Order of Premontre (better known as the Norbertines) to offer himself in atonement to God for a Norbertine priest that left the Order and the Church to join a schismatic national church.

As with the biographies of all the Saints, the story of the life of Blessed James Kern is one of edification and inspiration to the reader. Blessed James was a true shepherd of souls, zealous for the Glory of God and the salvation of souls. I was quite inspired by the life of Blessed James and the virtues he lived to a heroic degree. I highly recommend this short biography.

On the website where this book can be ordered the is this short summary-

Soldier and Apostle Called from the protective walls of the seminary to fight as a young soldier in World War I, he asks the Lord on bended knee for the grace to be showered with sufferings…

This is the story of Father James Kern’s total gift of self, and the touching way in which God took him at his word. Pope John Paul II said of him, “Out of love for Christ he did not selfishly cling to life, but consciously offered it for the good of others.”

Read this moving account of the young Norbertine priest who was designated one of the Catholic Church’s newest models of holiness by Pope John Paul II on June 21, 1998.
