Pope Benedict-UberPapst

Sometime early in the year, the Pontifical Commission "Ecclesia Dei" plans to issue a document clarifying questions that have arisen regarding the pope's 2007 document relaxing restrictions on use of the Tridentine Mass. Sources said the pope personally is interested in removing ambiguities, and will sign off on the new document.

Thanks to Mr. Ed Snyder for this news.

The Story of Michael

The Story of Michael

Background

What follows is a copy of a letter that was written by a young Marine to his mother while he was hospitalized after being wounded on a Korean battlefield in 1950. The letter came into the hands of a Navy Chaplin, who read the letter before 5,000 Marines at a San Diego Naval Base in 1951.

The Navy Chaplin had talked to the boy, to the boy’s mother and to the Sergeant in change of the patrol. This Navy Chaplin, Father Walter Muldy, would always assure anyone who asked that this is a true story.

This letter had been read once a year in the 1960’s over a Midwestern radio station at Christmas time. We present the letter and let it stand on its own merits.

Dear Mom,

I wouldn’t dare write this letter to anyone but you because no one else would believe it. Maybe even you will find it hard but I have got to tell somebody.

First off, I am in a hospital. Now don’t worry, you hear me don’t worry. I was wounded but I am okay you understand. Okay. The doctor says that I will be up and around in a month.

But that it is not what I want to tell you.

Remember when I joined the Marines last year; remember when I left, how you told me to say a prayer to St. Michael every day. You really didn’t have to tell me that. Ever since I can remember you always told me to pray to St. Michael the Archangel. You even named me after him. Well I always have.

When I got to Korea, I prayed even harder.

Remember the prayer that you taught me?

Michael, Michael of the morning fresh corp of Heaven adorning, you know the rest of it. Well I said it everyday. Sometimes when I was marching or sometimes resting. But always before I went to sleep. I even got some of the other fellas to say it.

Well, one day I was with an advance detail way up over the front lines. We were scouting for the Commies. I was plodding along in the bitter cold, my breath was like cigar smoke.

I thought I knew every guy in the patrol, when along side me comes another Marine I’d never met before. He was bigger than any other Marine I’d ever seen. He must have been 6’4” and built in proportion. It gave me a feeling of security to have such a body near.

Anyway, there we were trudging along. The rest of the patrol spread out. Just to start a conversation I said, “Cold, ain’t it.” And then I laughed. Here I was with a good chance of getting killed any minute and I am talking about the weather.

My companion seemed to understand. I heard him laugh softly.

I looked at him, “I have never seen you before, I thought I knew every man in the outfit.”

“I just joined at the last minute”, he replied. “The name is Michael.”

“Is that so,” I said surprised. “That is my name too.”

“I know,” he said, then went on, “Michael, Michael of the morning…”

I was too amazed to say anything for a minute. How did he know my name, and a prayer that you had taught me? Then I smiled to myself, every guy in the outfit knew about me. Hadn’t I taught the prayer to anybody who would listen? Why now and then, they even referred to me as St. Michael.

Neither of us spoke for a time and then he broke the silence. “We are going to have some trouble up ahead.”

He must have been in fine physical shape or he was breathing so lightly I couldn’t see his breath. Mine poured out in great clouds. There was no smile on his face now. Trouble ahead, I thought to myself, well with the Commies all around us, that is no great revelation.

Snow began to fall in great thick globs. In a brief moment the whole countryside was blotted out. And I was marching in a white fog of wet sticky particles. My companion disappeared.

"Michael," I shouted in sudden alarm.

I felt his hand on my arm, his voice was rich and strong, "This will stop shortly."

His prophecy proved to be correct. In a few minutes the snow stopped as abruptly as it had begun. The sun was a hard shining disc.

I looked back for the rest of the patrol, there was no one in sight. We lost them in that heavy fall of snow. I looked ahead as we came over a little rise.

Mom, my heart stopped. There were seven of them. Seven Commies in their padded pants and jackets and their funny hats. Only there wasn't anything funny about them now. Seven rifles were aimed at us.

"Down Michael," I screamed and hit the frozen earth.

I heard those rifles fire almost as one. I heard the bullets. There was Michael still standing.

Mom, those guys couldn't have missed, not at that range. I expected to see him literally blown to bits.

But there he stood, making no effort to fire himself. He was paralyzed with fear. It happens sometimes, Mom, even to the bravest. He was like a bird fascinated by a snake.

At least, that was what I thought then. I jumped up to pull him down and that was when I got mine. I felt a sudden flame in my chest. I often wondered what it felt like to be hit, now I know.

I remember feeling strong arms about me, arms that laid me ever so gently on a pillow of snow. I opened my eyes, for one last look. I was dying. Maybe I was even dead, I remember thinking well, this is not so bad.

Maybe I was looking into the sun. Maybe I was in shock. But it seemed I saw Michael standing erect again only this time his face was shining with a terrible splendor.

As I say, maybe it was the sun in my eyes, but he seemed to change as I watched him. He grew bigger, his arms stretched out wide, maybe it was the snow falling again, but there was a brightness around him like the wings of an Angel. In his hand was a sword. A sword that flashed with a million lights.

Well, that is the last thing I remember until the rest of the fellas came up and found me. I do not know how much time had passed. Now and then I had but a moment's rest from the pain and fever. I remember telling them of the enemy just ahead.

"Where is Michael," I asked.

I saw them look at one another. "Where's who?" asked one. "Michael, Michael that big Marine I was walking with just before the snow squall hit us."

"Kid," said the sergeant, "You weren't walking with anyone. I had my eyes on you the whole time. You were getting too far out. I was just going to call you in when you disappeared in the snow."

He looked at me, curiously. "How did you do it kid?"

"How'd I do what?" I asked half angry despite my wound. "This marine named Michael and I were just . . ."

"Son, " said the sergeant kindly, "I picked this outfit myself and there just ain't another Michael in it. You are the only Mike in it."

He paused for a minute, "Just how did you do it kid? We heard shots. There hasn't been a shot fired from your rifle. And there isn't a bit of lead in them seven bodies over the hill there."

I didn't say anything, what could I say. I could only look open-mouthed with amazement. It was then the sergeant spoke again, "Kid," he said gently, "everyone of those seven Commies was killed by a sword stroke."

That is all I can tell you Mom. As I say, it may have been the sun in my eyes, it may have been the cold or the pain. But that is what happened.

Love, Michael

Sober Statement for Priests-St. Norbert of Xanten

“O Priest, who are you?
You are not yourself because you are God.
You are not of yourself because you are the servant and minister of Christ. You are not your own because you are the spouse of the Church.
You are not yourself because you are the mediator between God and man. You are not from yourself because you are nothing.
What then are you?
Nothing and everything.
O Priest! Take care lest what was said to Christ on the cross be said to you:
‘He saved others, himself he cannot save!’”

FI News - Liturgical Changes at Griswold, Deo Gratias

The last few months, at the North American Mother House for the Franciscans of the Immaculate in Griswold, CT have been marked with great excitement, ever since the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross when the extra ordinary form of the Mass (Traditional Latin Mass or TLM) was celebrated with great solemnity by Fr. Peter Fehlner, who, following the Mass in the sacristy turned to the Acolytes and commented joyfully “that is the Mass that St. Peter celebrated”. The following day Fr. Angelo Geiger celebrated a beautiful low Mass and the momentum and zeal for the TLM has been growing rapidly ever since.

With the visitation of our Most Reverend Father Founder and Minister General, Fr. Stefano Manelli, came the news that he desired the novices to be proficient in serving the TLM as soon as possible. Of course, this news was received with great enthusiasm on the part of the novices who were given a few days a week to learn the detailed rubrics of serving it. Currently, the Griswold friary offers the TLM periodically, but with ever increasing frequency especially on Wednesdays for the 5:30 St. Joseph Mass, and for the evening Masses on feast days in honor of Our Lady. Diligently, the friars are preparing to celebrate a Missa Cantata (a Sung High Mass without Deacon and Sub-Deacon) with great solemnity for Christmas Eve Mass. To ensure that the Mass is offered with the greatest dignity and reverence as it has been passed down to us by Holy Mother Church, a careful study and preparation has been undertaken to learn the detailed but beautiful rubrics for the varying degrees of solemnity for which the Mass can be offered. Thankfully, we have had wonderful resources at our disposal and owe special thanks to the Society of St. John Cantius through their web site Sancta Missa, as well as receiving hands-on guidance from The Saint Gregory Society in New Haven, CT which is dedicated to preserving the TLM and has been doing so for over 20 years.

All this excitement about the liturgy has spilled over to the ordinary form of the Mass (Novus Ordo) inspiring our Father Guardian, Fr. Ignatius to announce that all Masses at the friary will be celebrated Ad Orientem (when the priest faces east, with the people, toward Our Lord in the tabernacle). There has also been an increasing number of Novus Ordo Masses offered in Latin, including our Sunday liturgy. Currently, the friars are working towards developing a schola choir to sing the Gregorian Mass parts for the ordinary and extraordinary forms of the Mass. Also we are implementing the long planned switch to Latin for our community prayers at the Griswold friary, such as meal prayers, visitation to the Blessed Sacrament, and a daily Rosary.

For all this excitement we sincerely say Deo Gracias, Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI, and

Praised be Jesus and Mary, now and forever

From Peter Cooper, Holy Trinity Church:

This morning Fr. Connolly announced (to the throngs in attendance at the 10o'clock Mass) that after his consultations with His Eminence, he (Fr. Connolly)has decided that the Tridentine Latin Mass will again be celebrated weekly at Holy Trinity. He mentioned that it remains for us to work out a schedule ofclergy to enable us to have the priests necessary to ensure proper coverage. There also will be careful consideration as to the time the Mass will be celebrated. The possibility of having the Latin Mass take place before theNovus Ordo one is under active consideration.

St. Padre Pio, Ecumenism the "RITE" Way

Padre Pio Credited With Parish's Conversion
Posted Thursday, November 29, 2007 - 01:08 PMBy Nieves San MartínPESCEANA, Romania, NOV. 28, 2007 (Zenit.org).

- The 71-year-old mother of a former Orthodox priest says she was cured of lung cancer through the intercession of Padre Pio. After the apparent miracle, the priest explained, he and his mother, and members of his parish, have become Catholics.Lucrecia Tudor was born into the Romanian Orthodox Church and her son, Victor, followed a vocation to the priesthood. In 2002, he was working in Pesceana, close to Valcea, in south central Romania. Another son, Mariano, dedicated himself to painting, especially iconography, and lives and works in Rome. The story of the family, and the church they are building dedicated to Saint Pio de Pietrelcina, was related to ZENIT by Italian journalist, Renzo Allegri.Lucrecia was diagnosed with a tumor in her left lung more than five years ago. Romanian doctors told her surgery was impossible and she had few months to live. Lucrecia and Father Victor turned to Mariano for help, hoping that a doctor in Rome could be found to give a better prognosis.Mariano contacted a well-known surgeon, who invited the young painter to bring his mother to Rome, where he would try to save her. After reviewing the reports from his Romanian colleagues, the doctor examined Lucrecia with more detail, only to arrive at the same conclusion: An operation was useless. He could only offer medications to ease the sharp pain, which, he predicted would increase in the terminal phase.Mariano kept his mother with himself in Rome so as to be near the doctor for checkups.

He was working on a mosaic in a church and, as his mother does not speak Italian, he kept her close by. While he was working, his mother walked through the church, contemplating the paintings and statues. In one corner, there was a large statue of Padre Pio. Lucrecia liked the statue and asked Mariano who it depicted. Mariano related briefly the story of the saint. In the coming days, he saw his mother spending all her time seated before the image, with which she chatted as if it were alive. Two weeks later, Mariano took his mother to the hospital for her checkup. The doctor said the tumor had disappeared.Lucrecia had asked Padre Pio to help her, even though she was Orthodox, and, she said, the saint had granted her request."The great cure of my mother, accomplished through Padre Pio in favor of an Orthodox woman, impressed me much," Father Victor said. "I began to read the life of the Italian saint. I told my parishioners what had happened. They all knew my mother and everyone knew we had gone to Italy in order to try a surgical intervention, and that she had returned home cured, without any doctor having operated."In my parish, they began to know and love Padre Pio. We read everything we found about him. His holiness won us over. Meanwhile, in my parish other sick people also received extraordinary graces from Padre Pio.

Among my people, there spread a great enthusiasm and, little by little, we decided to become Catholics, in order to be closer to Padre."The step from the Orthodox to the Catholic Church required a slow process. And there were difficulties of every kind, Allegri explained in relating the story. But the parishioners continued in the process and even decided to build a church to dedicate it to Padre Pio."The funds are the result of the savings of this poor people, and of the help of some German Catholics who heard our story," Father Victor said. "And my parishioners are those who are bringing forward the work, working for free, naturally. [.] After a few days, we celebrated solemnly the placing of the first stone. And it was a big party, because the Metropolitan Archbishop of Fagaras and Alba Julia of the Romanians, meaning, the highest authority of the Greek Catholic Church in Romania, came to celebrate [.] To conclude this ceremony, the metropolitan wished to meet my mother, cured through a miracle of Padre Pio, and posed with her for a photo."

Christendom College Add, Christendom College Offers Extraordinary Form of the Mass

College Offers Extraordinary Form of the Mass

Associate Chaplain Fr. Seamus O’Kielty, in accordance with the Pope’s recent Motu Proprio allowing for a more generous celebration of the Mass of Blessed John XXIII (Tridentine or 1962 Latin Mass), offered the extraordinary form of the Mass on November 2 in the College’s Chapel of Christ the King, a first in College history.

Fr. O’Kielty was ordained prior to the Vatican II changes in the Mass, and as such, spent his beginning years as a priest celebrating the Tridentine Mass. During the first two months of school this semester, he worked with the altar servers and reviewed the extraordinary form of the rite so that he could properly offer this great gift to the College family. The Mass of Blessed John XXIII continues to be offered each Friday morning, and at other times as well.

The College currently offers two Masses a day for its students, with the majority of them according to the ordinary form of the Mass and in English. Additionally, three of the College’s weekly Masses of the ordinary form are said in Latin, including a solemn Latin liturgy each Sunday with chant and polyphony. Having this new option (the extraordinary form of the Latin rite) available will enhance the liturgical life of the College according to the mind of Pope Benedict XVI.

another Anglican leader has had enough of moral relativism, Crossing the Tiber

Taken from ST. JOHN'S VALDOSTA BLOG

Episcopal Bishop John LipscombApparently, another Anglican leader has had enough of moral relativism. Here is an excerpt from his open letter to his diocese:

November 20, 2007,

Dear Friends in Christ,I have communicated to the Presiding Bishop my request to be released from my ordination vows and the obligations and responsibilities of a member of the House of Bishops. I have taken this step in order to be received into the Catholic Church. Through a long season of prayer and reflection Marcie and I have come to believe this is the leading of the Holy Spirit and God’s call to us for the next chapter of our lives. We are grateful to our brother in Christ, the Most Rev. Robert N. Lynch, the Bishop of St. Petersburg, for his openness to our request and for his prayerful support.I was blessed to grow up in a Christian home where I was given the gift of a deep love for the Lord Jesus Christ and a reverence for God’s revelation of his love and redemptive purpose in the Word written, as well as the Word made Flesh.

I was blessed to be brought into the family of the Episcopal Church 40 years ago. I have a deep love for the sacramental life, most especially the Eucharistic sacrifice through which God continues to pour his grace into our lives in the Word that needs no words.I will be forever grateful for the opportunities I had to serve this faith community as a deacon and priest. I am most grateful for the opportunity you, the people of the Diocese of Southwest Florida, gave me to serve as your bishop and to participate in the life of the Anglican Communion. You made it possible for me to share in the mission of God that can never be bound by geographical or political barriers.I believe God is now calling us to continue our ministry to serve in the healing of the visible Body of Christ in the world.

I am convinced our Lord’s deepest desire is for the unity of the Church.Note that the Lipscomb is finding his "UNITY" by joining the One, True Church, which is the REAL purpose of ecumenism. Pray for this man. This move takes a lot of courage.

Important: Ecclesia Dei to ask seminaries to teach Traditional Mass

Taken from Rorate Caeli Blog

Ecclesia Dei to ask seminaries to teach Traditional Mass
According to Italian news agency Adnkronos, the Pontifical Commission "Ecclesia Dei" will soon publish an order addressed to seminaries "in which it is required that the celebration of the Latin Mass be taught to future priests":

"According to what has been learned from authoritative sources, the dicastery presided by Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos (among the main supporters of the return of the Mass according to the pre-Conciliar rite) would be considering a circular addressed to seminarians which, in practice, is aimed directly to those bishops who [are] 'disobbeying' the Pope's motu proprio (...)."

It is not entirely clear from the report if the order will be an exclusive document or if it will be part of the general document of clarification of the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum which will be published shortly (according to several news agencies and sources).______________Tip: Le Forum Catholique.

Doctrinal official says people, not religions, are equal in dialogue

By Cindy Wooden
Catholic News Service

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- When Catholics engage in interreligious dialogue, they must know that equality exists among the participants, not the religions they represent, said Archbishop Angelo Amato, secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

"The fact that there are various religious propositions does not mean that they are equally true," the archbishop said in a Nov. 8 interview with L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper.

The newspaper conducted the interview after the archbishop gave a speech to the heads of Italian men's religious orders on the theme "Witnessing to Christ, the Only Savior, in a Multireligious Society."
Archbishop Amato had told the superiors general that, especially in a situation where there is so much doubt about the existence of objective truths, there is no room for dilettantes in interreligious dialogue.

While a "dialogue of charity" -- getting to know one another better, building friendships, overcoming prejudice -- is appropriate for all Christians, he told the newspaper, the "dialogue of truth" in which religious teachings are discussed "must be conducted with care by experts."

Unlike ecumenical dialogue, in which Christians seek unity based on a shared faith in Jesus Christ and a common baptism, interreligious dialogue is a search for understanding and peaceful coexistence based on a common humanity and common search for spiritual values, he told the newspaper.

"Interreligious dialogue -- which has as its aim the promotion of peace among peoples -- cannot and must not exclude conversion to the truth and to the Christian faith with respect for the l iberty and dignity of each person," he said.

"Paradoxically, however, in a certain (current of) Catholic theology of religions, and in certain pastoral practices, interreligious dialogue appears to have reached its end point with a preemptory affirmation that all religions are paths to salvation," he said.

"Equality, as an indispensable prerequisite for dialogue, regards the equal personal dignity of those involved and not the content" of their faith, Archbishop Amato said. "The Christian in dialogue cannot hide or silence the truth of his faith founded on Jesus Christ."

Obviously, the archbishop said, the truth of Christianity "cannot be and must not be imposed with force, but in freedom and absolute respect for the other's conscience."

"Dialogue is not an absolute that can take the place of truth and the proclamation of Christ," he said. "Being faithful to one's own religious identity card is the best passport for entering into the religious territory of others and dialoguing with them."

Bishops who resist Summorum Pontificum: “instruments of the devil”

Article reproduced from WDTPRS Blog

A kind reader sent me this fascinating excerpt from a talk given by His Excellency Most Rev. Malcolm Ranjith, Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments.

the talk was entitled “Faith, Obedience and Theology” and was delivered at the annual meeting of the Dutch Latin Liturgy Association (Vereniging voor Latijnse Liturgie) in ’s-Hertogenbosch (The Netherlands) on 6 October 2007. He gave the talk in English, but the person who sent it to me translated it from Dutch. So, it probably varies a little from the original English, which perhaps someone out there can dig up for us.

Read this, with my emphases.

“The motu proprio Summorum Pontificum on the Latin Liturgy of July 7th 2007 is the fruit of a deep reflection by our Pope on the mission of the Church. It is not up to us, who wear ecclesiastical purple and red, to draw this into question, to be disobedient and make the motu proprio void by our own little, tittle rules. Even not if they were made by a bishops conference. Even bishops do not have this right. What the Holy Fathers says, has to be obeyed in the Church. If we do not follow this principle, we will allow ourselves to be used as instruments of the devil, and nobody else. This will lead to discord in the Church, and slows down her mission. We do not have the time to waste on this. Else we behave like emperor Nero, fiddling on his violin while Rome was burning. The churches are emptying, there are no vocations, the seminaries are empty. Priests become older and older, and young priests are scarce.”

NB: His Excellency has made a connect between Pope Benedict’s decision to promulgate Summorum Pontificum and a remedy for ills in the Church, namely. empty churches, emtpy seminaries. Thus, this is something willed by God, for it comes from Peter as something for the good of the church at its most critical points of attack by the devil, namely, what happens in a church (worship of God and sanctification through the sacraments, especially Holy Mass) and what happens in a seminary (men are formed to be alter Christus). Thus, anyone who resists the provisions of the Motu Proprio, aimed at healing these problems of the Church, actually aids the Enemy of the soul and becomes the devil’s pawns.

Echoing the information reported by Isabelle de Gaulmyn in La Croix on Tuesday, Andrea Tornielli reports today in Il Giornale:

The Pope himself would have been very displeased due to some "resistance" displayed even in Italian dioceses, and it is probable that interpretative norms for the correct application of the document [the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum] in the sense willed by Benedict XVI may be issued soon.

DEO GRATIAS!

Pilgrimage For Restoration 2007

My family and I had the great privilege of participating in the last two days of the 12th annual Pilgrimage for Restoration sponsored by the National Coalition of Clergy & Laity. The Pilgrimage is a 65 mile march from the lake of the Blessed Sacrament(lake George) to the Shrine of Our Lady of the North American Martyrs, Auriesville, New York.

A summary explanation of the pilgrimage is as follows-

"What is the Pilgrimage for Restoration?
In its twelfth year, the annual pilgrimage is a spiritual journey of the faithful to the place where Saints Isaac Jogues, René Goupil and John LaLande were martyred 365 years ago. It is conducted in honor of Christ Our King, for the restoration of new Christendom, and in reparation for sins against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Invoking the intercession of America's saints and martyrs, we desire that the Catholic Faith restore every dimension of our lives: our hearts, families, workplaces, parishes, neighborhoods, cities, dioceses, the American nations.
The pilgrimage is an exercise of penance and prayer, of contradiction and restoration, having both a personal and social character. Modeled on the annual Pentecost pilgrimage to Notre-Dame de Chartres, France, we embrace the traditional doctrine & practice of Holy Church, with all its demands.
A special intention of the pilgrimage is the restoration of the Catholic family and the Latin litugical tradition. We hope thereby to show our attachment to the Church's Tradition and the riches it contains, not with the intention of reverting to some by-gone era, but rather of drawing benefits from the ancient sources and putting them to work in the world today."

The whole pilgrimage was capped off by a Solmn High Mass in the Extraordinary Rite at the Shrine of our lady of the North American Martyrs. A few photos.

"The traditional Mass did more to change my life then any 'relevant' teen Mass ever did."

A Sixteen year old Catholic writes to the news paper of the Diocese of Atlanta.

Letter to the Editor
Published: September 20, 2007
To the Editor:

I am 16 years old, and for the past 11 months I have attended the traditional Latin Mass weekly, while still attending the Novus Ordo Mass during the week. Because of this, I decided to address certain points made by Carroll Sterne in the Sept. 6 edition of The Georgia Bulletin. Mr. Sterne speaks about the type of Mass that someone of a younger generation is drawn to, and I thought that a teenager’s point of view might be helpful.
Mr. Sterne in his letter gives voice to the opinion of many of today’s liturgists when he says that no one from a younger generation would be drawn to the Latin Mass (many take this even further and assume that we would not like a reverent Novus Ordo Mass either). This opinion causes many of those who plan modern liturgies to do veritable back flips in an attempt to draw teenagers and young adults in. Sometimes this works, but it has a side effect: by doing these things, liturgists show that they have absolutely no faith in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass to change the lives of those in my generation. My generation knows about this lack of faith, we are able to see it every time we go to a “teen Mass” and experience priests ad-libbing prayers in an attempt to make them more relevant to us.
This lack of faith backfires; it sends us the message that we also should distrust the power of the liturgy, and it also can turn the Mass into something of a joke.
After experiencing this for months, I attended a Traditional Latin Mass and experienced something that I’d never seen before: Here was a priest who expected my life to be changed without adding anything to the Mass in an attempt to bring this change about. This priest had perfect faith in the power of the liturgy, and it showed. It was beautiful. The traditional Mass did more to change my life then any “relevant” teen Mass ever did.

Russian representatives attend Latin Mass in Loreto

Loreto, Sep. 18, 2007 (CWNews.com)

More than 700 people-- including Russia's ambassador to the Holy See, Nikolay Sadchikov, and a representative of the Russian Orthodox Church-- were in attendance when Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos (bio - news) celebrated Mass using the 1962 Missal at the basilica of Loreto, Italy, on September 14. The Colombian cardinal, who heads the Ecclesia Dei Commission, celebrated the Mass to mark the implementation of the motu proprio authorizing wider use of the traditional liturgy. Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos acknowledged the presence of the Russian Orthodox Church, and embraced him after the Mass and singing of the Te Deum. In his homily the cardinal remarked: "Surely our lady has heard this rite celebrated many times. For her it is not a novelty." He emphasized that the Pope's initiative is intended to promote reconciliation within the Church, and "we are not dealing with opposition between two rites."

Great News: Pavarotti Dies Reconciled To The Church

Tuesday, September 11, 2007
Pavarotti's return to the Church

Luciano Pavarotti's parish priest says the singer returned to the Church before he died. Before quoting the report, here something from the Gospel of Matthew

For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. 2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. 5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? 7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. 8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. 9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. 10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. 11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, 12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. 13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? 14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. 15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? 16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

Luciano Pavarotti, the world renowned tenor was laid to rest in Modena’s cathedral with a grand funeral which paid tribute to the opera legend and gave witness to his return to the Catholic faith.

The diocese had received criticisms that it had gone overboard in honoring a remarried divorcé. But Pavarotti's parish priest, Fr. Remo Sartori, said the twice-married singer had been reconciled with the Catholic faith, reported the Sydney Morning Herald. Pavarotti had received the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick before losing his battle against pancreatic cancer last Thursday, aged 71.

Church leaders and pastors, including Pope Benedict XVI, sent messages conveying their condolences. The Pope’s message expressed his sorrow at the loss of "a great artist who with his extraordinary interpretative talent honored the divine gift of music".

In his tribute, Archbishop Benito Cocchi of Modena recognized Pavarotti as an exceptional talent and as someone who “expressed himself in charity towards those who suffered."

One of the emotional climaxes of the funeral was a 1978 recording of Panis Angelicus (Bread Of Angels), performed by Pavarotti and his father, Fernando.

"Extraordinary Form" of the Mass on Long Island

New "Extraordinary Form" of the Mass at St. Matthew in Dix Hills, Long Island

For some four years now we have offered the Novus Ordo Mass (the Mass of Vatican II) celebrated in Latin each week with music provided by our Gregorian Schola. Because I have received so many letters from parishioners requesting the Tridentine Mass, I am happy to announce that the 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass in the chapel will become a weekly Tridentine Mass. The first Mass of this "extraordinary form" of the liturgy will be celebrated by Msgr. Vincent Keane on Sunday, September 16, 2007. It will be a learning process for both priests and people, and there may be some bumps along the way. But I am very happy to be able to offer this Mass, so important in our Catholic tradition, to those who desire it. I have been studying the liturgy, and look forward to being able to celebrate the Mass myself soon."

Tridentine Mass Enriches Catholic Culture at St. Martha Church in Sarasota

Although Pope Benedict XVI just authorized a wider use of the old Latin Mass in the Catholic Church this weekend, tradition-minded parishioners of St. Martha Church in Sarasota have been celebrating Mass in Latin for well over a decade. Coincidently this weekend, the Diocese of Venice also welcomed a new priest, Father James Fryar, who is trained in the celebration of Mass in Latin.

Father Fryar will be in residence at St. Martha Parish. "That's just something that happened to coincide," says Bishop Frank J. Dewane. "We didn't know when the Holy Father was going to be releasing the 'motu proprio.' It had been rumored for some time that it was going to happen." Because of growing interest in the Latin Mass, Bishop Dewane approached the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, an order established by Pope John Paul II in 1998 to promote ecclesial unity and traditional Roman rites, and asked for a priest who would celebrate the Latin Mass and minister to the growing number of families in the diocese who prefer the old rites.

In the Tridentine Mass a priest faces away from the congregation and whispers prayers in Latin, a language unfamiliar to most Catholics. The current vernacular Mass was approved as the standard in 1970 after the Second Vatican Council, and many Catholics were unhappy with the modernization of an ancient ceremony. "You hear "Latin Mass" and everybody goes.old style, old ways," observes Bishop Frank J. Dewane, "but it's tradition, and tradition is not always bad. Tradition can be a very positive thing." Bishop Dewane points out the artistry of Gregorian chant which is currently part of the Tridentine Mass at St. Martha every Sunday. "Some of the tones that the priests sing in various parts of the Mass are certainly beautiful, very melodic," he says. "It was a whole art.a very expressive part of the Church's tradition in music was in Latin and in chant." "I'm delighted as we all are," says Stan Valerga Chairman of Ecclesia Dei Society www.ecclesiadei-sarasota.org. "I think the Pope brought it to a level even we didn't expect and it's a positive," he adds. The Ecclesia Dei Society organized informally in Sarasota in 1994 to bring back the old Latin Mass in the Diocese of Venice. With approval from then-Bishop John J. Nevins, the first Tridentine Mass was celebrated at St. Martha on January 22, 1995.

Parishioners from across the diocese attend the Tridentine Mass in Sarasota. Valerga estimates between 25 to 30% are younger families who have discovered the Latin Mass. "The interesting thing is, many of them are young people who did not grow up with the Latin Mass, and some would say they harken back to what they don't know," says Bishop Dewane. "I think very much it is a movement of the spirit and we have to be open to that.alert to that within the church, where you have young men and women raising their families, and they want their children to experience this Latin Mass and bring them up in the tradition of the Church." Currently St. Martha Church in Sarasota is the only parish in the diocese that celebrates Tridentine Mass, but Bishop Dewane says a second Latin Mass will be scheduled at another parish in the southern part of the Diocese of Venice. St. Martha Catholic Church is located at the corner of Fruitville Road and Orange Avenue in downtown Sarasota.

Mass is celebrated in Latin every Sunday at 1:30 pm, every first Friday of the month at 12:45 pm and every first Saturday of the month at 9:15 am. Book Review- Blessed James Kern, O. Praem

Recently I had the pleasure of reading a book published by the Norbertine Canons of St. Michael's Abbey, titled Blessed James Kern, The Priest of Atonement. Blessed James joined the Order of Premontre (better known as the Norbertines) to offer himself in atonement to God for a Norbertine priest that left the Order and the Church to join a schismatic national church.

As with the biographies of all the Saints, the story of the life of Blessed James Kern is one of edification and inspiration to the reader. Blessed James was a true shepherd of souls, zealous for the Glory of God and the salvation of souls. I was quite inspired by the life of Blessed James and the virtues he lived to a heroic degree. I highly recommend this short biography.

On the website where this book can be ordered the is this short summary-

Soldier and Apostle Called from the protective walls of the seminary to fight as a young soldier in World War I, he asks the Lord on bended knee for the grace to be showered with sufferings…

This is the story of Father James Kern’s total gift of self, and the touching way in which God took him at his word. Pope John Paul II said of him, “Out of love for Christ he did not selfishly cling to life, but consciously offered it for the good of others.”

Read this moving account of the young Norbertine priest who was designated one of the Catholic Church’s newest models of holiness by Pope John Paul II on June 21, 1998.

Ancient Roman Mass ON EWTN Sept. 14

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEDIA ADVISORY

EWTN to Televise Live Tridentine Mass Celebrated by the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter
DENTON, Nebraska – AUGUST 17, 2007 – For the first time in its 26 year history, Mother Angelica’s Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) will be broadcasting a live Solemn High Mass at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama on September 14, 2007 at 8:00AM EST. EWTN has asked for the assistance of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, an international Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right, to help celebrate this "extraordinary" form.
This past July 7th, Pope Benedict XVI affirmed the beauty and importance of the Tridentine Mass by issuing Summorum Pontificum, a papal document encouraging and confirming the right of all Latin Rite priests to use this more ancient use of the Mass starting September 14th. The Tridentine Mass was the normative liturgy experienced by Latin Rite Catholics prior to the Second Vatican Council.
"Most Catholics have not seen this heavenly celebration in over 40 years," said Father Calvin Goodwin, a professor at the Society’s international English-speaking seminary located in Denton, Nebraska. "We are very excited to help EWTN and to support the Holy Father’s call for a wider presence of this form of the Mass. This is a cause for great joy."
Priests and seminarians from Denton, Nebraska will travel to Alabama and provide the celebrant, deacon, subdeacon, preacher, master of ceremonies and altar servers.
About the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter
Established in 1988 by Pope John Paul II, the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter is an international society of Catholic priests entrusted with the preservation and administration of the Catholic Church’s ancient Latin liturgical traditions. Over 120 seminarians are preparing for the priesthood in the Fraternity’s two seminaries in Bavaria, Germany and Denton, Nebraska.
About EWTN
